GBU's National Project
Home Is Where the Heart Is

In 2001 the GBU National Board of Directors announced our new National Project - Building a Habitat for Humanity House.

Following that initial announcement, GBU was underway raising the funds necessary to make this worthy project a reality. Through such fund raising methods as the GBU Habitat Bank, Learn to Speak™ German Software sales, Raffle Ticket sales, the GBU Fraternal Tree, and member donations, we began raising the capital necessary to build the GBU Habitat house.

While GBU was aggressively active raising the money necessary to fund this project, the Pittsburgh Habitat Board was hard at work finding our new homeowners. And, on January 8, 2003, Celia Dutrieuille and her twin daughters were selected by the Pittsburgh Habitat Board as the recipients of the GBU Habitat House. Celia signed a Letter of Agreement on January 15, 2003 and at such time she began to volunteer her time at another family's Habitat house construction site. After 50 hours of service at this site, she would graduate and begin helping out at her own home.

Another crucial phase to this project was the acquisition of the property that the Habitat house would reside on. Although the process of acquiring the property for the GBU Habitat house took longer than we expected, we were able to acquire a very good piece of land located in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, which is approximately 12 miles from the GBU home office. After many months of preliminary work and "red tape", excavation of the land was able to begin in September of 2003. Only six months later, with the assistance of skilled labor and our many volunteers, we were able to complete construction of the GBU Habitat house.

On March 7, 2004, GBU presented the Dutrieuille family with their new home. The completion of the GBU Habitat house was one of the most involved projects GBU has ever undertaken. Our national project of funding and building a GBU Habitat for Humanity House was both fun and successful. We extend our sincere thanks to all who contributed their time, talents, labor, and financial support. A special "Fraternal Thanks" goes to the districts that held fundraising events, and of course, to our GBU workers that volunteered many, many hours of their time, many days in single-digit temperatures and heavy snow to help physically build the GBU Habitat house. Without all of their combined efforts, this house would not have become a reality.

Since dedication day, we have received several very nice thank-you cards from the Dutrieuille family, thanking GBU for sponsoring their house. They are very appreciative of our efforts. GBU is very proud to have had this opportunity to help make a difference in people's lives.

Again, thanks to all of you for your support of this most worthy national project. You were great!
